Look back through what this account has said about cantilever parasols over the years and you can watch the opinion move, slowly, like a shadow following the sun it’s meant to be blocking. Early on, the line was firm: it’s a want, a big silly want, a table umbrella with delusions of grandeur, and a normal centre pole does the job for a fraction of the fuss. That held for about two summers. Then somebody actually lived with one through a full outdoor season, dining table underneath, no pole in the middle of the sandwiches, and the tone in every piece since has quietly softened.

Here’s what’s true now, stated plainly rather than argued for: nothing else lets you sit eight people round a table with zero obstruction, and once you’ve had that, going back to a centre pole feels like being handed a pillar in a restaurant seat you paid full price for.

But nobody’s pretending it’s simple. The base is the size of a small child, it takes two adults and a bit of swearing to get it off the patio and into the shed before the first proper storm, and one of ours has developed a genuinely irrational hatred of the base cover, which never sits right and flaps all winter like it’s trying to leave.

It tilts, it rotates, it does the thing where you chase the sun round the table without getting up, and that bit never stops being satisfying, three years in.

Where the site’s opinion has really shifted is on whether this counts as a need. It doesn’t.

Nobody needs shade delivered at this level of engineering. But the honest answer, the one we keep landing on across every piece that’s touched this category, is that once the table is big enough and the crowd is regular enough, “want” stops being a fair word for it. It becomes the thing that decides whether Sunday lunch happens outside or gets abandoned indoors because someone’s forearm is on fire.

The base weight debate alone has filled more of our group chat than any other single feature across every outdoor product we own, and we still haven’t fully agreed, some of us are firmly in the “buy heavier than you think you need” camp after one memorable afternoon involving a gust, a tablecloth, and a parasol lying flat across next door’s fence.

It survives storage badly if you’re lazy about it and survives everything else brilliantly, which is a trade the whole team has made peace with even if the cover hasn’t.

So where does that leave us, having argued about this in slow motion for years rather than in one sitting.

Not a need. Never was. But a want that, once you’ve had the shadow move for you instead of the other way round, gets harder and harder to talk yourself out of every spring.
