The old pillow finally gave up sometime around the four year mark, though “gave up” is generous, it had actually been dead for at least a year and a half before that and nobody wanted to be the one to admit it. Whoever slept on it left grooves that stayed there permanently, two craters like a bad mattress in miniature, and the rest of us kept quiet about it because pointing that out felt like starting a fight nobody had the energy for.

The complaint, and it’s a fair one, is that half this team will sleep on a pillow well past the point of dignity and say nothing, and then act personally wounded when someone else finally throws it out. There was no vote. There was a bin bag and a Tuesday.

The new one went on the bed and the difference was immediate in a way none of us expected from something that’s just foam in a case. Cooler against the face, for one, which sounds like marketing until you’re the one lying there at midnight not sweating into it for once. It’s also got a bit of give that actually pushes back rather than just sitting there sulking under your head, which is apparently what the old one had stopped doing sometime during the second Obama administration.

On a made bed it does something the old one hadn’t done in years, it actually looks like a pillow rather than a flattened envelope with aspirations.

Square corners. A bit of height. Someone in the group photographed it unprompted, purely for the crime of looking presentable, which tells you where the bar had sunk to.

Not everyone’s sold on the smell, there’s a faint new mattress off gassing thing for the first few days that one person found genuinely unbearable and the rest of us mostly ignored, and it does run warmer than the marketing suggested despite the whole cooling gel claim, so add that to the pile of pillow promises we’ve stopped fully believing.

Shopping for it was its own small horror, forty tabs open, half of them just reviews arguing with each other, firm versus soft versus “supportive” which apparently means nothing and everything depending who’s typing.

We ordered two different ones the first time round out of sheer indecision and only one earned its place, the other’s now doing quiet backup duty in a cupboard, which is either a sensible compromise or expensive cowardice depending who you ask in this house.

What’s stuck with us, more than the neck support or the cooling claims or any of it, is how fast a pillow can just quietly go bad without anyone noticing, and how long we all apparently sat there noticing and saying nothing. Nobody’s proud of that. The new one’s staying though, craters and all, until someone works up the nerve to admit this one’s dying too.
