If you go back through everything this account has ever said about memory foam, you can actually watch the opinion move. Three years ago it was written up like a minor miracle, the thing that fixed a bad back and a worse marriage argument about mattress firmness. Lately the tone has gone cooler, more raised eyebrow, more “it’s fine, calm down.” That drift is basically this piece in miniature, except now we’re all in the room at once instead of spread across a timeline, and nobody’s backing down quietly.

The overrated case gets made properly here, not as a throwaway. The heat retention thing is real and nobody warned us. One mattress in this collective ran so warm for the first six months that the person sleeping on it started keeping a glass of water on the nightstand purely for forehead purposes. Foam that “responds to body temperature” turns out to mean it holds your temperature, hostage, all night, and calling that a feature is doing some work.

And yet.

The defenders are not backing down either, because two of us came from mattresses that transmitted every 3am trip to the bathroom like a seismograph, and going from that to actual silence felt less like an upgrade and more like a personality change. One of us slept through a partner getting up four separate times in one night and only found out about it at breakfast.

That’s not marketing, that’s just what happened.

Delivery is its own small event every time. The box always looks too small for what it claims to be inside it, like someone’s played a trick on you, and the walk from the front door to the bedroom is never as simple as it should be. One of these came up a stairwell with a ninety degree turn at the top, and getting it round that corner took two people, a lot of shouted instructions that helped nobody, and one moment where it genuinely felt stuck for good.

The unrolling is the bit nobody’s cynicism survives. You cut the plastic, step back out of instinct more than necessity, and watch it start climbing toward its actual height like it’s got somewhere urgent to be. It’s slower than you expect and somehow still startling, and there is at least one person on this team who filmed it the first time and still has the video, unembarrassed, ready to show anyone who claims memory foam is boring.

So overrated. Also not overrated. Both things are true depending which one of us you ask and possibly what night you ask us on. What’s actually changed, watching this account’s own opinion shift over time, is that we’ve stopped expecting one clean verdict and started expecting exactly this, an argument that never fully resolves but somehow still ends in everyone sleeping fine.
