The old sconce came down on a Tuesday, which nobody planned, it just finally happened, the way these things do after someone’s said “we should really sort that” for about four years without doing anything about it. It had gone a sort of dull brass yellow, less gold and more the colour of an old coin you find down the sofa. One of us has a whole thing about never removing a light fitting until the replacement has physically arrived in the house, refuses to leave a bare wire even for an afternoon, and the rest of us find this hilarious and also correct, so the old one sat propped against the skirting board for two days like a body nobody wanted to deal with.

What we noticed straight away, once the new one was up, is how much a bit of proper gold does to a room that is otherwise chaos. This particular wall is next to the sofa, which means it lives above a permanent scatter of remote controls, a phone charger nobody claims, and at any given time roughly one sock. None of that changed. The room did not become tidy because we put a nice light on the wall, we want to be clear about that, anyone telling you a light fixture will sort your life out is selling you something. But the light itself, warm, a bit dressy, sitting above all that mess, somehow made the mess look like a choice instead of an accident. Which is either the best trick in interiors or the biggest con, we go back and forth.

The old one only ever worked as a single dim glow, on or off, no in between, so evenings had two settings, blinding overhead light or a room that felt like a waiting room. The new one has proper adjustable warmth, and honestly that’s the whole upgrade in one sentence, the rest is opinion.

Half of us think gold only works in a room with at least one other metal already doing something, a mirror frame, a lamp base, anything, otherwise it looks lonely up there. The other half think that’s overthinking a wall light and you should just put the thing where you want the light, which is, annoyingly, also correct.

There’s a specific comedy to a proper gold fixture next to real domestic life, a dressing gown on the door hook underneath it, a child’s drawing taped to the wall six inches away, and it never once looks embarrassed about the company it’s keeping, that’s the bit that won us over.

We are, unfortunately, exactly the kind of people who will now look at every other light fixture in the house with fresh suspicion, and one of us has already started measuring the hallway.
