We are, as a group, nearly unanimous that this thing is the correct answer whenever somebody’s moving in together, turning thirty, or getting divorced and furnishing a sad new flat with dignity. Nearly unanimous. One of us thinks it’s a boring gift and has said so at every single group chat discussion about it for three years running, and we let that opinion sit there because it’s not wrong exactly, it’s just outvoted.
Here’s the case for it. It’s black, so it goes with the sofa nobody agreed on, the rug someone’s mother picked, and whatever chaos happens later. It doesn’t ask the recipient to have a taste yet. Most people at the “here’s a housewarming gift” stage of life do not have a taste yet, they have a mattress on the floor and big feelings, and a small solid black table quietly handles both.
The evening test is where it earns its keep, and this is the bit the holdout can’t argue with even while trying.

Put a lamp on it, something warm, not the blue-white one your landlord left behind, and the table basically disappears into the shadow it makes for itself while the light does all the talking. One of us gave one as a wedding present specifically because the couple’s old side table was a plastic crate with a doily on it, which is its own kind of statement, just not the one they wanted.
The dissent, properly stated, is this: giving someone furniture instead of something they’d actually pick for themselves is a small act of control dressed up as generosity, and a black end table specifically says “I have thought about your living room more than you have,” which, fair, we have. That’s the whole objection. It’s a decent one.

It has never once won a vote.
We’ve bought this exact category of thing four separate times for four separate people, once badly, when we went for a glass topped version that looked sharp in the shop and menacing in a home with a dog. Solid top, always. The dog owner still brings this up.
It survives being a plant stand, a coaster for a mug that’s been cold for two hours, a place to dump keys nobody puts on the actual key hook. Nobody has ever unwrapped one and looked disappointed, though one recipient did ask if it came with the lamp, which, no, but honestly good instinct.
So the holdout keeps holding out, we keep buying it anyway, and every single time it turns out to be the thing still standing in the corner of someone’s living room two years later doing its one job without complaint, lamp on, everything else in that room having changed at least twice.
