Almost everyone in this office agrees the white vanity table is the best looking piece of furniture we own collectively, and then there is one holdout who thinks white furniture is a trap set by people who have never owned a mascara wand, and honestly the arguments this generates have outlasted several actual relationships in this building.

The pro side will tell you a white vanity table looks like a promise. Clean lines, a bit of morning light, the kind of surface that photographs like it belongs to someone with her life together. The holdout will tell you that promise lasts exactly four days, and then it looks like the aftermath of a very small, very glittery crime scene, because nobody’s real vanity has one vase and a hairbrush on it. Ours currently has two hair straighteners tangled into one cable, a perfume bottle with no lid, seven bobby pins arranged like they’re evidence of something, and a receipt from 2019 that nobody has the courage to throw away. It still looks better than most furniture in this building looks empty.

The white finish gets defended fiercely and abandoned quietly. Someone will insist it’s wipeable, practically indestructible, and then two weeks later admit there’s a foundation smudge near the mirror that’s been there since March and has essentially become part of the design now.

One of us bought a marble effect top specifically to hide stains and can confirm it works, mostly, unless the stain is bright orange self tanner, which apparently laughs at marble effect anything.

The drawers are where the real personalities come out. Half the desk gets one drawer for “important things” that is actually just where hope goes to die, a graveyard of half used lip liners and a single earring waiting for its pair to reappear from wherever earrings go. The other side keeps theirs embarrassingly tidy, dividers and everything, and gets mocked for it constantly, right up until someone needs a spare hair tie at nine in the morning and knows exactly which drawer to raid.

The mirror attached to most of these tables gets more emotional weight than furniture should really carry.

It’s where the day starts and where it sometimes quietly falls apart a bit, and there is no piece of furniture in this office that has witnessed more mascara related crises before 8am.

The holdout still isn’t sold, still mutters something about white being “a decision you’ll regret by autumn,” and still, weirdly, has the tidiest one of all of us. Nobody’s pointed that out to their face yet. We’re saving it.
