This white end table has lived in five different spots in the last two years and we have the scuff marks on the wall to prove it, three of them from the same corner, which tells you something about how confident we were each time we moved it there. It started next to the good armchair, the one nobody actually sits in, as a nice little home for a lamp and a coaster nobody used either. Then it did a stint by the front door holding keys and one glove, always just one. Currently it’s next to the sofa doing the job it was apparently bought for, which is a bit of a shock to all of us.

Half the group insists this table earns its keep every single day, drinks on it, laptops balanced on it, a bowl of crisps at any given moment. The other half thinks it mostly just stands there looking clean and white and gets photographed more than it gets used, which, fair, it has been in the background of at least one video call that had nothing to do with furniture. Nobody has settled this.

We’ve stopped trying.

What isn’t up for debate is the wipe down situation. Someone put a plate of tomato pasta directly on the top with zero coaster in sight, a full sauce ring formed, and it came off with a damp cloth and about four seconds of effort.

That single incident has been mentioned in three separate conversations since as though it were a personality reference for the whole table.

The height took some hunting. Too low and your drink is basically on the floor, too high and it looks like it’s trying to compete with the sofa arm, which it will lose. We measured against three different sofas before landing on one that actually sat level, and one of us still swears it’s half an inch too tall, a claim nobody else can verify with their eyes but that gets repeated anyway.

The white finish shows everything, obviously, dust, a faint ring from a mug someone insisted was cold, a cat’s opinion of the surface left in fur. But it also makes the room look tidier than it is, which might be its actual function. There’s a scratch near one leg from a move that went badly through a doorway, and depending who you ask that’s either a flaw or proof the thing has been lived with properly.

So no, we haven’t agreed on how much it’s actually for and how much it’s just there. What we have agreed on, eventually, after a lot of shuffling furniture around rooms that didn’t need it, is that wherever it ends up, it earns the spot within a week. Even the half of us who think it’s mostly decorative keep putting their tea on it. That’s the whole argument, really, settled without anyone admitting defeat.
