We have bought this table four times now as a gift and it has revealed something none of us particularly wanted revealed, which is that half of this team eats dinner on the sofa most nights and the other half thinks that is faintly criminal. The table itself is innocent in all this. It just goes from coffee table height to dining height with one hand and no swearing, which is the whole point, and somehow that one feature has turned into a referendum on how people actually live.

The laptop-on-lap crowd loves it because it becomes a desk at eleven in the morning and a table for a bowl of pasta at eight, no dining table required, no shame required either. The other camp finds this mildly alarming, the idea of eating properly at a coffee table like a function you’re supposed to grow out of, and has said so, repeatedly, while still using it exactly this way when nobody’s looking.

As a present it works stupidly well for the person who lives alone and hates commitment, the “I don’t need a proper dining setup, I have a sofa and dignity” type. Give it to someone with three kids under ten and it becomes a step stool, an art table, and once, in one household we know of, a stage for a puppet show that went on far too long. It survives all of it. It has survived one of our own team dragging it across a laminate floor for two years rather than lifting it, which the table did not love but also did not die from.

We do not love that raising it fully sometimes takes both hands and a small negotiation with whatever’s sitting on top, so if you’re gifting it to someone who keeps a lit candle going at all times, warn them, or just buy the candle-adjacent friend a normal table instead.

At night though, low, lamp on beside it, it stops being a talking point and just becomes furniture again, which is honestly the highest compliment we can give. The surface catches the light in a way that makes even a Tuesday look staged, wine glass, one sock somewhere off camera, the whole thing looking like it belongs on a page rather than in our actual living room. Nobody has ever regretted receiving one at Christmas, though two people have regretted receiving one from us specifically because it exposed exactly how they eat, and there’s no unseeing that once it’s been said out loud at your own dinner table, or coffee table, whichever camp you’re in.
