Look back through anything the collective has written about thermal curtains over the years and you can watch the opinion move. Early on the line here was basically that they were a scam dressed up as a lifestyle upgrade, heavy fabric with a fancy name, buy a normal curtain and stop paying extra for the word “thermal” printed on the label. That was the consensus for a long time. Then somebody actually hung a pair in a room with a genuinely useless single glazed window and the whole position quietly fell apart.
Because here is the annoying truth. They work. Not dramatically, nobody’s waking up in a sauna, but the difference on a proper cold morning is real enough that you notice it in your feet before your brain catches up.

One of the flats in the group used to need the heating on by six thirty just to make the bathroom tolerable, and with the curtains actually shut properly overnight, not just pulled across and left gaping at the middle like most of us do, that crept back to almost eight. Nobody’s popping champagne over ninety minutes. But ninety minutes is ninety minutes you’re not standing in front of a radiator negotiating with your own willpower.
The size thing catches people out every time. Buy to the width of the actual window and you get sad little curtains that look like they’re apologizing for existing, all the cold air just strolls in around the edges like it wasn’t even a barrier to begin with. Go wider, properly wider, and the room looks intentional instead of like you panic bought at half nine on a Sunday. Which, to be fair, several of us did.
Nobody talks about the weight until they’re stood on a chair at eleven at night trying to rehang one after washing it, arms shaking, muttering. These are not light curtains.

They are not delicate curtains. Washing them is a two person job in most machines and a one person shoulder injury if you ignore that advice, which someone here absolutely did and will confirm was a mistake. Drying them takes actual planning, not the fling it over a radiator and hope approach that works for everything else in this house.
Looks wise, opinion is still split and probably always will be. Half the group thinks a heavier curtain automatically looks more expensive, more finished, properly grown up. The other half thinks it just looks like you’re bracing for a power cut. Both are a little bit right.
What’s actually landed here, after years of being wrong about it in both directions, is quieter than either camp expected. They’re not a lifestyle. They’re just the thing that makes January slightly less personal.
