Opinion on rattan pendants around here has done a full lap over the years. When we first started buying them the whole site was suspicious, mostly because everyone had a memory of one from a rental flat that was basically a dust trap on a string, sitting above the kitchen table doing nothing but collecting a fine grey coat that nobody wanted to climb up and deal with. Then there was a stretch where every single room shot was one of these things and it felt less like a light and more like a personality test everyone had decided to fail the same way. We’re somewhere calmer now. Most of us actually own one. Most of us would buy it again, which for this account counts as a five star review.
Here’s what nobody tells you until you’re three years in: the shade is basically bulletproof against children and dogs, and completely defenseless against dust.

A dog has walked into one at full speed, mid zoomies, and the light survived, the dog looked mildly betrayed, the woven shade did not even flex. A toddler has grabbed the bottom rim while being lifted for a better view of something and swung on it like a small confused bell.

Fine. Totally fine. But leave it two months without a proper going over with a soft brush attachment and it looks like it’s been in an attic since a war. The gaps in the weave hold dust the way a car boot holds sand after one trip to the beach, in every seam, forever, in places you didn’t know existed.
Cleaning it properly is more fiddly than it has any right to be for something that looks this relaxed. You can’t exactly wipe it down like glass, and a wet cloth on the wrong rattan leaves it looking patchy for weeks. One faction here swears by taking it down entirely twice a year and doing it outside with compressed air, treating it like a genuine event. The other faction has never taken theirs down once and just attacks it in place with a long handled brush and a fair amount of muttering. Both shades still look fine, so honestly we’ve stopped arguing about method and just accept that dusting is the toll you pay for a light that photographs this well.
The bulb situation matters more than anyone expects, a bright white bulb turns the whole thing a bit medical and undoes the point of owning it, so warmer is worth chasing even if it means an extra trip back to the shop.
We’ve landed here as a group, eventually, after being wrong about it for years, both directions: buy it for the shape and the warmth, not the idea that it’s low maintenance, because it isn’t, it just fails in a very forgivable way.
