The delivery driver was the one who said it, dumping the mattress in the hallway and asking if this was going in a spare room, because “nobody buys a full for a main bedroom anymore, it’s all king now.” Which was rude, mostly correct, and also exactly the argument we’d been having for three weeks before he ever showed up.

Here’s the thing about a full mattress. It’s the size everyone in the group had opinions about and nobody could agree what those opinions were for. One side of the room was adamant it’s a guest room size, a spare room size, a size you buy so your sister has somewhere to sleep at Christmas and complains about it for exactly one night. The other side pointed out that plenty of us slept on fulls well into our thirties, alone or otherwise, and lived to tell the tale, and maybe the whole “it’s for guests” thing is just something people say to justify buying bigger than they need.

We went back and forth on it so many times the order confirmation email actually expired once. Bought it, cancelled it, argued about the cancellation, bought a different one, argued about that too. At one point someone had genuinely added a queen to the basket “just to compare,” which is the mattress equivalent of texting an ex to see if you still feel something.

The trial period is where this gets honest, because nobody actually used it properly.

Everyone swears they will, lying there for forty minutes on night one doing a full body scan like they’re auditioning for a spa advert, and then by night four it’s just the bed, you’re just tired, you fall asleep watching something on your phone and wake up with it wedged under the pillow. Out of everyone who’s bought a full through this whole saga, exactly one of us sent one back, and that was because it arrived smelling like a tire fire for the first five days, not because of the size itself.

What we actually like about it, once the arguing stops: it fits in a room a queen makes look apologetic.

Two people can share it if they’re the sort of two people who don’t mind knowing each other’s elbows intimately. One person alone gets to sprawl in a way that feels almost decadent, all that extra mattress just for spreading out star shaped at 2am.

What we don’t like: guests notice the width before they say a single polite thing about the room, every time, without fail, like there’s a script.

So no, we never landed on a tidy answer for who a full is actually for. We just landed on the fact that we kept coming back to it anyway, cancelling and reordering, like a couple who breaks up twice a year and always ends up back at the same address.
