This one has moved house more times than any of us, and none of those moves had anything to do with the sconce itself. It has lived above a headboard, next to a bathroom mirror, in a stairwell for one deeply confusing month, and it currently sits in a hallway where it does basically nothing except look nice at people walking past it fast. The sconce is fine with all of this. It has never once complained. Which is more than can be said for the drilling.

What actually came out of buying this thing wasn’t a verdict on the light. It was a fight, gentle but real, about who we are as people.

Half the team wants a plan before the drill comes out, a paper template, a level, a moment of stillness where you commit. The other half treats the wall as a rough suggestion and moves the thing three times in a week based on vibes, mood, and whatever Instagram account they scrolled past that morning. Neither side has ever fully forgiven the other for this, and both sides are convinced their approach is the responsible one.

The stairwell month happened because someone decided it would look moody there, and it did, briefly, until you realized nobody actually stands still in a stairwell long enough to enjoy moody lighting, they’re just trying to get to the bathroom without dying. That’s the thing nobody tells you about a black wall sconce, it needs a spot where a person actually lingers, not just a spot that photographs well for four seconds.

It genuinely earns its keep in a messy room, which is most of ours, most of the time. There’s a coat on the floor, a mug from Tuesday, a child’s shoe that belongs to nobody currently in the house. The sconce does not care.

It sits there being black and slightly severe and somehow makes the chaos underneath it look intentional, like the mess is a choice and not just what happens when four adults share a hallway. One of us finds this deeply reassuring. The other thinks it’s basically a magic trick played on ourselves, and refuses to be comforted by a lamp.

We have drilled into the wrong stud exactly once, patched it, and pretended it never happened, and honestly the wall looks better for the extra hole nobody talks about anymore.

What we’ve landed on, if you can call it that, is spite. Or near enough. One faction wants it fixed forever, chosen once and left alone like an adult home. The other wants it loose enough to chase the light around the house for years, which is really just wanting permission to keep rearranging your life in small increments and calling it decor. We haven’t resolved this. The sconce has just quietly ended up being the thing both arguments happen next to.
