Someone dropped a photo into the group chat of a black table with chunky pedestal legs and the words “this one, non negotiable” and honestly it has not settled since. That single message caused a proper argument, the kind that spans three days and somehow drags in someone’s aunt’s dining room as evidence.

The pedestal camp thinks a single center leg is the only correct answer because it means you can actually put your knees wherever you like, no negotiating with a table leg for territory like it’s a border dispute. The four leg camp thinks a pedestal table wobbles if you so much as lean on it while reaching for the salt, and has a specific table in mind that did exactly this at a birthday dinner, sending a full glass of red across a white tablecloth that someone had ironed. That one detail has been repeated in the chat no fewer than eleven times since. It has become the entire argument in miniature.

What’s actually true, and both sides grudgingly admit this when pushed, is that black hides everything. Wine, crumbs, the toddler’s felt tip incident that’s become something of a house legend, all of it just disappears into the finish rather than announcing itself the way it would on pale oak.

Nobody is fighting about that part. That part everyone loves.

Where it gets properly heated again is chairs. Someone always turns up with dining chairs that looked perfect in a showroom and then discovers the table’s apron, the bit that runs under the top, sits about an inch lower than expected, so four out of six chairs slide in fine and two just don’t, and now you’re eating dinner at an angle like you’re perched at a bar that’s slightly too low. One of us has genuinely measured the gap between chair arm and table edge with a tape measure mid dinner party, which the rest of the group has never let go of and never will.

There’s also a smaller, quieter disagreement running underneath the big one, about whether a black table needs a rug under it or whether that’s fussy.

Nobody’s fully committed to either side on that one, it just comes up occasionally and gets shouted down.

The pedestal photo still hasn’t been resolved, for the record. It’s been sitting in the chat for what is now closing in on two years, unanswered, undeleted, occasionally resurrected by whoever’s shopping again. What we agree on is knee room matters more than the leg count that provides it, and chairs need to be tried, not assumed, before anything gets ordered. Everything else, apparently, we’re happy to keep arguing about indefinitely.
