There’s a group chat that exists purely to relitigate whether the white printer stand in the corner of the office looks clean or looks like a hospital appliance, and it has been going for eleven months with no sign of stopping. One faction thinks the flat white front and the boxy shape look properly considered, like someone in the house actually planned the room instead of just accumulating furniture until a corner filled up. The other faction thinks it looks like it belongs in a dentist’s waiting area, next to a poster about flossing, and has said so, repeatedly, in increasingly elaborate ways.

Nobody has moved an inch on this. Someone bought a plant to put on top of it specifically to “soften the vibe,” which the other side described as “putting a fern on a filing cabinet and hoping nobody notices the filing cabinet.”

What everyone does agree on, grudgingly, is the drawers, because the drawers are the whole reason it’s still in the house at all. Two drawers under the shelf where the printer sits, and they fill up with the same specific junk in every house we’ve tried this in: spare ink cartridges nobody remembers buying, a phone charger for a phone that got upgraded two Christmases ago, a stack of paper that’s either very important or completely worthless, there is no third category. One drawer gets treated with something close to reverence.

The other one becomes, within about three weeks, a place where receipts go to die.

The open shelf underneath is where things get feral. It’s meant for extra paper reams, tidy, stacked, sensible. In practice it’s where a roll of wrapping paper has lived since March, standing up at an angle like it’s trying to escape.

We will say, because we’d say it to anyone’s face, that the white finish shows every fingerprint like it’s keeping a diary, and somebody wipes it down before guests come over and somebody else just accepts the smudges as proof of life.

The aesthetics argument flared up again last week when one side floated painting it a different color entirely, just to end the debate by removing the white altogether, which the other side treated as an act of betrayal roughly on the scale of redecorating a shared kitchen without asking.

That one’s still open. Genuinely unresolved. We’re not going to pretend we landed on a tidy answer for you, because we haven’t landed on one for ourselves.

What we can say is that it earns its floor space. It’s the one piece in the room that quietly holds the boring stuff so the desk doesn’t have to, and even the side that hates the look admits that when the drawers are shut, the room looks like adults live there, at least until the wrapping paper falls over again.
