There is a white storage unit that lived in the corner of the office for forty pounds and did nothing wrong for two years, and there is the one that replaced it, which cost closer to two hundred and has never once let a door hang slightly open like it’s thinking about it. Those two units are basically the whole argument.

The cheap one came flat packed in a box so light one of us carried it up two flights without noticing it was the actual unit and not the packaging. It went together in about forty minutes with an Allen key that bent slightly under pressure and never quite recovered. It looked fine. It photographed fine. For a good while that felt like winning.

Then the drawers started doing the thing where they open on a diagonal, like they’re trying to tell you something.

The white went slightly yellow near the handles first, from hands, from light, from just existing in a room with a window. Nobody in the group was shocked. Half of us had said at the time that forty pounds for something with a full depth of paper and a two year old’s felt tip collection inside it was probably a bit optimistic, and the other half said it’s a filing cabinet, not a marriage, it just needs to hold paper.

The pricier one arrived heavier than expected, which should have been a clue, and it still closes the same way it did on day one, no diagonal, no drama. That’s really the whole difference.

It’s not more exciting to own. It’s just quiet in a way the other one never managed to be.

Depth caught more than one of us out, on both units, in different directions. The cheap one was shallower than the box implied, so the box files that lived in the old cabinet simply didn’t, they stuck out like they were trying to escape. The nicer one is deep enough for actual archive boxes, which nobody thought they’d need until the day someone tried to shove three years of tax stuff in there in one go and it went in without complaint. Height matters more than anyone plans for too. The cheap one sat just low enough that nothing on top of it looked deliberate, printer, plant, forgotten mug, permanent fixture apparently. The other one sits at a height where a lamp on top looks like a choice rather than an accident.

Nobody’s saying spend two hundred pounds on a box for paper if paper genuinely isn’t going anywhere near it. But if it’s holding anything with weight, anything that gets opened daily, anything with a felt tip nearby, the difference between the two units shows up faster than anyone expects, usually within about a year, usually right around the point someone tries to shut a drawer with their foot and it just doesn’t.
