The group chat has been going for eleven months now, on and off, about a chair nobody actually needs. One of us thinks a velvet bedroom chair is the single best piece of furniture you can own for doing absolutely nothing productive in. Another thinks it’s a glorified clothes rack with delusions of grandeur, and has the photo evidence to prove it, a chair buried under three coats, a gym bag and something that might be a wedding outfit from 2019.

Nobody is winning this argument. That’s the important context here.

The one in favour will tell you, at length, about the specific ten minutes after a bath when you sit down in one, tea in hand, and feel like a different and better person than the one who was scrolling in bed twenty minutes earlier. The velvet does something a normal chair fabric doesn’t, it holds warmth in a way that feels almost personal, like the chair remembers you were cold. That’s an hour in, not five minutes in.

Five minutes in it just looks nice. An hour in it’s doing actual work.

The one against will tell you, also at length, that an hour in is exactly the problem, because that’s how long it takes before someone’s ankles are up on the arm and the whole shape of the thing has gone from “elegant reading nook” to “where limbs go.” Velvet shows every dent from a body that’s been in it for a while.

It’s forgiving right up until it isn’t, and then you’re smoothing the pile with your hand like you’re apologising to it.

Both are right, which is the annoying part.

We will say this much without disagreement: buy the chair with the low, sturdy base and skip the delicate curved leg one, because someone’s cat treats every chair leg as a personal challenge and thin turned wood does not survive that encounter twice. That’s not a design opinion, that’s just what happened.

Where it splits again is colour. One of us wants the chair to disappear into the room, a green so close to the wall it’s basically camouflage. The other wants it to be the loudest thing in the bedroom, mustard, unapologetic, visible from the landing. Neither side is budging. There have been screenshots sent of other people’s bedrooms as evidence for both cases, which settled nothing.

What we can agree on is this: a velvet bedroom chair earns its keep by being sat in properly, not admired from the doorway. The ones that fail are the ones nobody actually uses, they just collect coats and quietly become furniture-shaped clothes horses, which one of us maintains is still a valid use of a chair and the other considers a small tragedy.

We’re not resolving this today either. The group chat’s still going.
