It arrived at half eleven on a Tuesday, which nobody had planned for, and the whole thing happened because someone was scrolling in bed after two glasses of wine and a bad day, and forty minutes later there was a mattress on the way. No spreadsheet. No comparing five options in a browser tab. Just a click and then that specific dread the next morning of wondering what you’ve actually done.
The box itself was enormous, obviously, and getting it up the stairs was a two person job that turned into a four person job with a lot of shouting about angles. Once it was unrolled there was that smell, the new mattress smell, somewhere between a car interior and a swimming pool, and half the flat wanted the windows open immediately while the other half insisted it would be fine by morning. It was not fine by morning.

It took closer to four days before you could lie on it without getting a faint hit of foam every time you rolled over, and one of us swears it lingered nearer two weeks, though that might just be someone who notices smells more than the rest of us.
Where it actually split us was looks, not comfort, which surprised everyone. Half the group thinks the quilted top with the piping down the side looks proper and hotel like, the kind of mattress you’d be happy for a guest to see. The other half thinks it looks like something you’d find in a caravan in 2009, and has said so more than once, unprompted, usually while making the bed.

Nobody has fully backed down. The compact reader
For a mattress bought on a whim, the springs and foam layer are doing their job fine, that part settled in within a week and hasn’t been mentioned since, which tells you where the real drama actually is.
Months on, it still gets brought up, usually when someone’s changing the sheets and has another go at the piping. But here’s the thing nobody expected: it has survived a full year, a cat that treats it as personal property, and one incident involving a spilled coffee that should have ended in tears and didn’t, because the cover came off and went straight in the wash like it was nothing. That’s the bit that’s quietly won people over, more than the look ever will.
So does the impulse purchase still feel like a good idea. Mostly, yes, with an asterisk the size of a piece of piping. Nobody regrets buying it. Half of us still think it looks a bit much. The other half have started defending it at dinner parties, which counts as progress, even if the argument itself shows no sign of actually being finished.
