Half of us think a black desk looks like you’ve got your life together. The other half think it looks like a mistake you’ll be dusting for the rest of your natural life, and honestly, six months in, the second half is winning on points.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: black shows everything. Every ring from a mug that wasn’t quite cool enough, every fingerprint, every fine layer of the dust that apparently lives in this building specifically to torment dark furniture. One of us wipes it down every morning like it’s a religious practice. Another has simply accepted defeat and now refers to the smudges as “texture.”

And yet. There’s something about sitting down at a big black surface with nothing on it that makes you feel like you’re about to do something important, even if the something important is answering four emails and looking at a spreadsheet for forty minutes before lunch.

It photographs well. It makes a laptop look expensive even when the laptop is three years old and wheezing. Say what you want about the maintenance, it earns its keep on vibes alone.

The arguments really start after hour four, though, which is where the desk stops being a mood and starts being a piece of equipment your body has opinions about.

Someone on this team did an eleven hour stretch at theirs during a deadline week and reported back that their wrists felt like they’d been in a minor car accident, wholly the fault of a desk that sat two inches too high for the chair it came with. Nobody warns you that a desk is only as good as the chair you happen to own, and a beautiful slab of black nothing will absolutely let you ruin your own spine in silence while looking fantastic doing it.

The other side of that argument, the long hour crowd who actually got their setup right, will tell you a solid desk that doesn’t wobble under a keyboard is worth more than any amount of colour. No flex, no bounce, no coffee doing a slow migration toward the laptop every time somebody leans on it. That part, we all agree on. It’s just everyone got there by a different route and at least one of us got there with a chiropractor.

There’s also the small daily comedy of the actual black desk against actual black desk chair against actual black cable management box, all bought at different times from different places, none of them quite the same shade of black, which only becomes obvious in direct sunlight and by then it’s too late to pretend you didn’t notice.

So: love it for the mornings it makes you feel like a person with a career. Leave it for the fingerprints, the wrist ache nobody accounted for, and the quiet horror of three different blacks in one room. We’re not settling this one. We’ve stopped trying.
