The argument about whether the full sofa bed was a mistake ran for exactly nine days, which we know because that’s how long it sat there before anyone actually slept on it. One camp thought we’d been sold a lounging sofa wearing a sofa bed’s name for a markup. The other camp hadn’t unfolded it yet and was arguing on principle. Then a pipe went in the spare room, the actual bed in there became unusable for a fortnight, and the sofa bed got slept on by necessity rather than curiosity. Argument over. Nobody won it, the boiler man just made it irrelevant.

Turns out it’s properly good once someone’s committed to it.

Two adults, one of whom snores in a way the other has strong opinions about, survived thirteen nights on it without either party sleeping on the actual floor out of spite, which is more than we can say for the last one. The mattress isn’t hotel quality, nobody’s pretending that, but it’s a long way past the eggbox-with-a-grudge situation we were bracing for.

The near return, if we’re honest, wasn’t really about comfort. It was about the fold itself, which on day one felt like assembling a deck chair with someone shouting measurements at you. One of us nearly boxed it back up there and then out of pure irritation. Now it takes under a minute and gets done one handed while holding a cup of tea, so either we got quicker or we got over ourselves.

Possibly both.

Nobody warned us about the dust. As a sofa it sits low and wide, and the gap underneath is exactly deep enough to hide a mountain of it and just shallow enough that you can’t get a normal hoover attachment in there without lying on the floor like you’re checking for a lost earring. One of us does this weekly out of principle. The rest of us do it when guests are actually due, and we’re not proud of that but we’re also not going to pretend otherwise.

The floor underneath, though, cleans up fine, better than fine actually, because nothing’s screwed down permanently and the whole frame lifts enough to get a cloth right across in one go. That’s the bit nobody puts in the photos, the unglamorous underside, and it’s honestly one of the better arguments for the thing existing at all.

It’s not for daily folding, we’ll say that plainly. Ask it to become a bed every single night and something in the hinge will eventually have opinions about that. But as the thing you pull out three or four times a year for a cousin who’s overstayed their invitation, or a plumbing emergency nobody asked for, it’s earned its floor space twice over. We stopped arguing about whether we should have bought it around the same time we stopped having anywhere else for anyone to sleep.
