There is a wooden bed frame currently disassembling itself in slow motion in a spare room, and it keeps getting compared, unfavorably, to a frame that got thrown out four years ago after a flood. That’s the whole debate. One side keeps saying “at least the old one from the flood house never made a sound,” which is technically true and also not the flex it thinks it is, because that frame was eventually condemned by actual water damage. The other side points out that this one, the current one, announces itself. Every single time. It’s not subtle about it.

Here’s the actual noise, because that’s the thing nobody warns you about with these: it’s not one squeak, it’s a whole conversation.

A creak when you sit on the edge to put your socks on. A different, lower creak when you roll over at 2am trying not to wake anyone, which of course wakes everyone.

And then there’s the joint by the headboard that’s developed what can only be described as a personality, it groans once, settles, groans again, like it’s thinking about something. We tightened the bolts. We tightened them again three weeks later. Someone suggested felt pads under the slats, which helped for about a month and then stopped helping, the way felt pads always do.

The flood house bed, for the record, was cheaper. Nobody wants to say that out loud because it undermines the argument, but it’s true, and it’s part of why the comparison keeps coming up, half of us think you get what you pay for and the other half think we just got lucky once and have been chasing that luck ever since.

What we do actually like: it looks proper. Solid, a bit heavy, the kind of thing that makes a bedroom look finished rather than assembled, which is more than we can say for the flood one, which always looked slightly temporary even when it had been there six years. Nobody’s arguing about the wobble either, everyone agrees there’s a wobble, right at the footboard, the kind you only notice when you’re half asleep and stub a toe on the way past and the whole frame shifts like it’s dodging you personally.

If we bought again, and this is the closest thing to a group verdict anyone’s willing to commit to, we’d want the look of this one with the silence of the other one, which doesn’t exist as a product, we’ve checked, we’ve actually stood in a shop arguing about it out loud while a very patient employee waited for us to leave. Until that frame gets invented, we’re stuck rating things against a bed that’s been in a skip since 2021, which feels unfair to everyone involved, including the current bed, which really is trying its best.
