It came in the box already looking suspicious. Tassels everywhere, four fat corner ones and a fringe running the whole seam, the kind of pillow that photographs like it’s trying to win something. Our stance on this category has actually swung hard over the last year or two. There was a stretch, maybe eighteen months, where anything with a tassel got filed under “trying too hard” and quietly left out of the cart. Now half the cushions on the good sofa have one somewhere. Nobody officially announced the change of heart.

It just happened, the way these things do.

This one nearly didn’t survive its first week. Out of the box the tassels sat stiff and a bit too uniform, like they’d been ironed by someone with a grudge. It looked less like a cushion and more like a prop from a photo shoot that hadn’t been touched by an actual human.

There was a genuine conversation about repacking it and sending it back before anyone had even sat next to it, which for a cushion is a pretty dramatic start.

Then someone actually used it. Propped against the arm of the sofa during an evening that involved a lot of complaining about a laptop, and the tassels started doing what tassels apparently need a few weeks to learn, which is relax. They loosened, went a bit uneven, started catching light differently depending on which way they’d been flattened that day. It stopped looking like a display item and started looking like something that lived there.

Against actual skin, cheek down, half asleep on a Sunday, it’s better than expected. The main panel is soft in the properly worn in way, not the slippery synthetic way, and the tassels stay mostly out of the way unless you’re the sort of sleeper who ends up diagonal, in which case you will wake up with fringe across your face and no one to blame but yourself.

On a made bed it earns its keep completely. Four other cushions can be doing something plain and forgettable and this one drags the whole arrangement up a level just by having movement to it, catching a shadow the others don’t. On a messy bed it looks slightly ridiculous, honestly, tassels poking out from under a duvet like something escaping.

The corner tassels fray a little faster than the rest and one of us has already trimmed a loose thread with kitchen scissors, badly, and it still hasn’t been noticed by anyone else in the house, which either means it was a good trim or means nobody looks that closely, and we’ve decided not to find out which.

We were wrong about the whole category for longer than we’d like to admit. This one’s staying, tassels, stray thread and all.
