The plan was breakfasts. Two people, two bowls, maybe a laptop balanced on the end for someone catching up on emails before the school run. That was the pitch when the box arrived, huge, way bigger than a table that small has any right to come in, and half of us were already saying it wasn’t going to get used the way it was bought for, it was going to get used the way everything in this kitchen gets used, which is as a landing strip for whatever nobody wants to deal with yet.

We were right, for what it’s worth. Post gets opened there. Keys live there. At one point there was a single roller skate on it for eleven days and nobody claimed it.

The other side of the argument maintains that it does still do breakfasts, most mornings, and that a table can be two things at once without anyone needing to be declared wrong, which is a very diplomatic way of saying they lost the argument and won’t admit it.

It nearly went back the second week. Not because of the surface, because of the wobble.

One leg sat a fraction proud on our floor, which is old and uneven and has opinions of its own, and every cup on that table did the small anxious rattle of something about to spill and never quite committing to it. We stood there taking turns pressing down on corners like we were diagnosing a car. Someone suggested a folded beer mat under the short leg, which is the most honest fix in this entire house and has been under three separate pieces of furniture at various points in its life.

Assembly itself was fine, if you count fine as two people, one instruction sheet that had clearly been translated by someone who had never seen a table, and a shared vocabulary of increasingly rude words for the little hex key it comes with. Twenty minutes, maybe less if you’re not also refereeing a disagreement about which way the bolt goes.

It stayed, in the end, not because the wobble fixed itself, it didn’t, the beer mat is still there and at this point has tenure, but because a table that gets covered in keys and post and one abandoned roller skate is clearly a table doing its job, just not the job on the box. The breakfast dream never fully died either, it just got demoted to weekends, which honestly might be the more honest use of a small kitchen table than the fantasy we bought it for. Nobody here fully agrees on what it’s actually for. We’ve stopped trying to settle it. The table doesn’t seem bothered either way, it just sits there, slightly propped, holding whatever we put on it, which might be the most accurate description of this whole kitchen we’re going to get.
