Someone has to say it: nobody on this team takes their shoes off before sitting down on the bench, they just sit, shoes and all, right on the linen looking part, and then act baffled two months later when there’s a scuff shaped exactly like a heel sitting there like a fingerprint at a crime scene. This has been raised in the group chat four separate times. Nothing has changed.

The bench itself, if you can get anyone to stop arguing about the humans involved for a second, is genuinely good at the actual job, which is holding boots without you having to bend down and negotiate with them. Ours has a woven fabric seat over a padded top, and the arms are a painted wood that looked lovely for exactly one winter before the school bag zips started leaving little silver scratches in the corners, right where every kid in the building apparently needs to swing their bag off their shoulder.

The seat fabric is where the actual disagreement lives, if we’re honest, and we mostly are. One camp thinks the woven top is the whole point, breathable, doesn’t hold the smell of wet trainers the way a solid cushion does. The other camp has found actual mud pressed into the weave in a way that a wipe down does not fix, only a proper vacuum attachment does, and has never let this go.

Neither side has moved an inch on this in fourteen months.

What isn’t up for debate is the storage underneath, which everyone agrees is the best part and nobody argues about, mostly because it’s just cubbies and cubbies don’t have feelings to hurt. Six pairs fit if you’re being reasonable about it, nine if you’re being a menace and stacking flip flops sideways like Tetris, which someone on this team absolutely does every single week and refuses to stop doing even after being asked, politely, several times.

The arms took a beating nobody warned us about. Not from shoes, from bags, from a toddler using them as a launchpad, from someone leaning their entire body weight on one corner while wrestling a boot off.

Eighteen months in, both arms show the same worn patch, right where a hand naturally lands, which either means the finish is soft or the whole team has identical hands, we haven’t ruled it out.

And still, at the end of every single complaint, the bench wins, because a hallway without a bench in it is just a room where everyone stands on one foot trying to get a shoe off while balancing against the wall like a flamingo having a bad day. We know this because we lived it for two years before buying one. Nobody’s proud of that. Nobody’s changing their shoe habits either.
